for a prostitute’s fee is only a loaf of bread, but the wife of another stalks a man’s precious life.


Woe, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, offspring who do evil, children who act corruptly, who have forsaken the Lord, who have despised the Holy One of Israel, [[who are utterly estranged!]]


but instead there was joy and festivity, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating meat and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”


leave the way; turn aside from the path; let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.”


“Come,” they say, “let us get wine; let us fill ourselves with strong drink. And tomorrow will be like today, great beyond measure.”


for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.


And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord! Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, “We are free; we will come to you no more”?


Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me and went after worthless things and became worthless themselves?


“O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me!


The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the wealth that will belong to me.’ So he divided his assets between them.


When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that region, and he began to be in need.


But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’


Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property.


“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.


But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.


So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near,


suffering the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.
