Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?


You have broken through all his walls; you have laid his strongholds in ruins.


Bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and calling of convocation— I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity.


And daughter Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a shelter in a cucumber field, like a besieged city.

Our holy and beautiful house, where our ancestors praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins.


But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy and to carry in no burden through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates; it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.


“For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You shall become an object of execration and horror, of cursing and ridicule. You shall see this place no more.


Thus you shall say to him, “Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built and pluck up what I have planted—that is, the whole land.


Listen! Fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon are coming to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for his temple.


The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate; her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter.


The Lord himself has scattered them; he will regard them no more; no honor was shown to the priests, no favor to the elders.


The Lord’s anointed, the breath of our life, was taken in their pits— the one of whom we said, “Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.”


Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders.


Because he despised the oath and broke the covenant, because he gave his hand and yet did all these things, he shall not escape.


I will lay your cities waste, will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your pleasing odors.


as on a day of festival.” I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it.


so I make you despised and humbled before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.
