Lamentations 1:2

My companions are treacherous like a torrent bed, like swollen streams that pass away,

so I am allotted months of emptiness, and nights of misery are apportioned to me.

May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.

I am the scorn of all my adversaries, a horror to my neighbors, an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me.

I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping.

They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

If the poor are hated even by their kin, how much more are they shunned by their friends! When they call after them, they are not there.

But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.

Keep your feet from going bare and your throat from thirst. But you said, “It is no use, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.”

If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not such a land be greatly polluted? You have prostituted yourself with many lovers, and would you return to me? says the Lord.

All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you, for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are so numerous.

And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in crimson, that you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life.

O that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

I called to my lovers, but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their lives.

They heard how I was groaning, with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day that you have announced, and let them be as I am.

Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. Look, O Lord, at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!

My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people, because infants and babes faint in the streets of the city.

therefore, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated; I will gather them against you from all around and will uncover your nakedness to them so that they may see all your nakedness.

She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, “I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better with me then than now.”

Put no trust in a friend; have no confidence in a loved one; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your embrace,

These are united in yielding their power and authority to the beast;

And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the whore; they will make her desolate and naked; they will devour her flesh and burn her up with fire.
