12 Therefore the Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they turn their backs to their enemies because they have become a thing devoted for destruction themselves. I will be with you no more unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

You made us turn back from the foe, and our enemies have gotten spoil.


Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies.


The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.


Rather, your iniquities have been barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.


When this people or a prophet or a priest asks you, “What is the burden of the Lord?” you shall say to them, “You are the burden. I will cast you off, says the Lord.”


Take warning, O Jerusalem, or I shall turn from you in disgust and make you a desolation, an uninhabited land.


Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them until no one is left. Woe to them indeed when I depart from them!


Your eyes are too pure to behold evil, and you cannot look on wrongdoing; why do you look on the treacherous and are silent when the wicked swallow those more righteous than they?


When Moses told these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly.


Do not go up, for the Lord is not with you; do not let yourselves be struck down before your enemies.


For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will confront you there, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”


Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them, pursuing them as far as Hormah.


Do not bring an abhorrent thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it. You must utterly detest and abhor it, for it is set apart for destruction.


As for you, keep away from the things devoted to destruction, so as not to covet and take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel an object for destruction, bringing trouble upon it.


Then she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” When he awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.


So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them, and he sold them into the power of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.


When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept.


Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and let us find out how this sin has arisen today.
