When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself; he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.


who long for death, but it does not come, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures;


who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they find the grave?


then you scare me with dreams and terrify me with visions,


I loathe my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone, for my days are a breath.


I am blameless; I do not know myself; I loathe my life.


So I hated life because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.


Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family in all the places where I have driven them, says the Lord of hosts.


And now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”


When the sun rose, God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint and asked that he might die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”


Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.


And in those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.
