So couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, as the king had commanded, saying, “O people of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that he may turn again to the remnant of you who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria.


He wrote letters in the name of King Ahasuerus, sealed them with the king’s ring, and sent them by mounted couriers riding on fast steeds bred from the royal herd.


So the couriers, mounted on their royal steeds, hurried out, urged by the king’s command. The decree was issued in the citadel of Susa.


“My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away; they see no good.


Disaster overtakes disaster; the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are destroyed, my curtains in a moment.


Declare among the nations and proclaim; set up a banner and proclaim; do not conceal it, say: “Babylon is taken; Bel is put to shame; Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame; her idols are dismayed.”


I set a snare for you, and you were caught, O Babylon, but you did not know it; you were discovered and seized because you challenged the Lord.


The king of Babylon heard news of them, and his hands fell helpless; anguish seized him, pain like that of a woman in labor.


the fords have been seized, the marshes have been burned with fire, and the soldiers are in panic.


That very night Belshazzar, the Chaldean king, was killed.
