Then they cried aloud, and, as was their custom, they cut themselves with swords and lances until the blood gushed out over them.

The word of the Lord came to me:

The word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:


because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remains. For the Lord is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.


For every head is shaved and every beard cut off; on all the hands there are gashes and on the loins sackcloth.


therefore thus says the Lord God: I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, cut off the Cherethites, and destroy the rest of the seacoast.


They shall put on sackcloth; horror shall cover them. Shame shall be on all faces, baldness on all their heads.


You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.


They shall not make bald spots upon their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or make any gashes in their flesh.


Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair for your pampered children; make yourselves as bald as the eagle, for they have gone from you into exile.


Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always howling and bruising himself with stones.


“You are children of the Lord your God. You must not lacerate yourselves or shave your forelocks for the dead.


Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.
