Then Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to wrong the boy? But you would not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.”


and also for the innocent blood that he had shed, for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord was not willing to pardon.


King Joash did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him but killed his son. As he was dying, he said, “May the Lord see and avenge!”


There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:


haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,


In vain I have struck down your children; they accepted no correction. Your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.


Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things


But your eyes and heart are only on your dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence.


Thus says the Lord: Act with justice and righteousness and deliver from the hand of the oppressor anyone who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the alien, the orphan, and the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place.


Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “It is the Lord who sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.


The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:


if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own hurt,


You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it.


Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” He replied, “You have said so.”


and they conspired to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.


Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.


so that the blood of an innocent person may not be shed in the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, thereby bringing bloodguilt upon you.


because they shed the blood of saints and prophets, you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!”
