This is because he has forsaken me, worshiped Astarte the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and has not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my ordinances, as his father David did.


But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Get up, go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?


Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the descendants of Aaron, and the Levites and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to be consecrated with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods.


They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass.


Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.


But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.


and have hurled their gods into the fire, though they were no gods but the work of human hands—wood and stone—and so they were destroyed.


Can mortals make for themselves gods? Such are no gods!”


Therefore thus says the Lord: Ask among the nations: Who has heard the like of this? The virgin Israel has done a most horrible thing.


Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me and went after worthless things and became worthless themselves?


The priests did not say, “Where is the Lord?” Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit.


How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of prostitutes.


in order that I may take hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, all of whom are estranged from me through their idols.


Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are more turbulent than the nations that are all around you and have not followed my statutes or kept my ordinances and have not even acted according to the ordinances of the nations that are all around you,


For all the peoples walk, each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.


and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.


Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists” and that “there is no God but one.”


Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods.


They made him jealous with strange gods; with abhorrent things they provoked him.


They made me jealous with what is no god, provoked me with their idols. So I will make them jealous with what is no people, provoke them with a foolish nation.


Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help and the sword of your triumph! Your enemies shall come fawning to you, but you shall tread on their backs.”


You know that you were ransomed from the futile conduct inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold


She named the child Ichabod, meaning, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
