After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”


I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,


But he said to her, “You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive good from God and not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.


“How happy is the one whom God reproves; therefore do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.


The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and his soul hates the lover of violence.


Before I was humbled I went astray, but now I keep your word.


It is good for me that I was humbled, so that I might learn your statutes.


I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right and that in faithfulness you have humbled me.


But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, so that those who love your name may exult in you.


Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,


but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.


The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.


From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him.


And I will put this third into the fire, refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’ ”


and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.


Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world,


“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man.


and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,


We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.


But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him”—


but anyone who loves God is known by him.


Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one.


you must not heed the words of those prophets or those who divine by dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you indeed love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.


Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,


Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments.


Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.


From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.


But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings,


By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son,


And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children— “My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when you are punished by him,


And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise.


Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?


Indeed, we call blessed those who showed endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about, for the Lord is compassionate and merciful.


But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated,


But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.


If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you.


And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.


And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.


We love because he first loved us.


Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.


I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.


To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
