See, you are relying now on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.


How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?


Let me abide in your tent forever, find refuge under the shelter of your wings. Selah


Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth, for the Lord has spoken: I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan, and the widow’s cause does not come before them.


Woe, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, offspring who do evil, children who act corruptly, who have forsaken the Lord, who have despised the Holy One of Israel, [[who are utterly estranged!]]


Why do you seek further beatings? Why do you continue to rebel? The whole head is injured, and the whole heart faint.


Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement; when the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;


For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on it, and the covering is too narrow to wrap oneself in it.


Woe to those who hide a plan too deep for the Lord, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”


For they are a rebellious people, faithless children, children who will not hear the instruction of the Lord;


Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!


Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a covert from the tempest, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.


Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over its places of assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night. Indeed, over all the glory there will be a canopy.


Woe to those who drag iniquity along with cords of falsehood, who drag sin along as with cart ropes,


But they rebelled and grieved his holy spirit; therefore he became their enemy; he himself fought against them.


I held out my hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices;


The Lord spoke thus to me while his hand was strong upon me and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying:


“Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what it fears or be in dread.


Now if people say to you, “Consult the ghosts and the familiar spirits that chirp and mutter; should not a people consult their gods, the dead on behalf of the living,


Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord.


What then do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?


Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: This is what you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me: Pharaoh’s army, which set out to help you, is going to return to its own land, to Egypt.


They have closed in around her like watchers of a field because she has rebelled against me, says the Lord.


The Lord has said to you, ‘O remnant of Judah, Do not go to Egypt.’ Be well aware that I have warned you today


But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have turned aside and gone away.


He said to me, “Mortal, these are the men who devise iniquity and who give wicked counsel in this city;


He said to me, “Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day.


And utter an allegory to the rebellious house and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Set on the pot; set it on; pour in water also;


The Egyptians shall never again be the reliance of the house of Israel; they will recall their iniquity when they turned to them for aid. Then they shall know that I am the Lord God.


Like the hardest stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not fear them or be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.”


The sword rages in their cities; it consumes their oracle priests and devours because of their schemes.


And now they keep on sinning and make a cast image for themselves, idols of silver made according to their understanding, all of them the work of artisans. “Sacrifice to these,” they say. People are kissing calves!


Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me.


He said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts.


And now you, a brood of sinners, have risen in place of your fathers, to increase the Lord’s fierce anger against Israel!


But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.


All who hear the words of this oath and bless themselves, thinking in their hearts, ‘We are safe even though we go our own stubborn ways’ (thus sweeping away the moist with the dry)—


You have been rebellious against the Lord as long as he has known you.


Remember; do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness; you have been rebellious against the Lord from the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place.


But wicked people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived.


So the leaders partook of their provisions and did not ask direction from the Lord.
