In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria captured Samaria; he carried the Israelites away to Assyria. He placed them in Halah, on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.


I look at the faithless with disgust because they do not keep your commands.


“Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan, I will now rise up,” says the Lord; “I will place them in the safety for which they long.”


Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.


You have made your people suffer hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us reel.


Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die.


Good sense wins favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin.


On that day the Lord will again raise his hand to recover the remnant that is left of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.

The word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah.


Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am going to break the bow of Elam, the mainstay of their might,


Take up your positions around Babylon, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her; spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the Lord.


Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.


Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes because his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, for that is the vengeance of the Lord, vengeance for his temple.


I will punish Bel in Babylon and make him disgorge what he has swallowed. The nations shall no longer stream to him; the wall of Babylon has fallen.


Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify her strong height, from me destroyers would come upon her, says the Lord.


Let all their evildoing come before you, and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my groans are many, and my heart is faint.

Then King Belshazzar became greatly terrified, and his face turned pale, and his lords were perplexed.


In the vision I saw myself in Susa the capital, in the province of Elam, and I was by the Ulai Gate.


As for the ram that you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of Media and Persia.


If you are to be taken captive, into captivity you go; if you kill with the sword, with the sword you must be killed. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.


As the ancient proverb says, ‘Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness,’ but my hand shall not be against you.
