King Shalmaneser of Assyria came up against him; Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.


In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria captured Samaria; he carried the Israelites away to Assyria. He placed them in Halah, on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.


Therefore the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire.


What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth,


so as not to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain? For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.


The fortress will disappear from Ephraim and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the people of Israel, says the Lord of hosts.


For thus it shall be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is ended.


From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I pine away; I pine away. Woe is me! For the treacherous deal treacherously; the treacherous deal very treacherously.”


Manasseh devoured Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh, and together they were against Judah. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.


The Lord sent a word against Jacob, and it fell on Israel,


Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.


Thus says the Lord: As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who live in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.


The Lord will be terrible against them; he will shrivel all the gods of the earth, and to him shall bow down each in its place, all the coasts and islands of the nations.
