city full of shouting, tumultuous city, panic-stricken town? Your slain are not slain by the sword, nor are they dead in battle.


They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished.


Their slain shall be cast out, and the stench of their corpses shall rise; the mountains shall flow with their blood.


Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them; the mountains quaked, and their corpses were like refuse in the streets. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.


For by fire will the Lord execute judgment, and by his sword on all flesh; and those slain by the Lord shall be many.


So the Lord raised adversaries against them and stirred up their enemies,


the Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west, and they devoured Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.


for those who led this people led them astray, and those who were led by them were left in confusion.


That is why the Lord did not have pity on their young people or compassion on their orphans and widows, for everyone was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth spoke folly. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.

Because of this put on sackcloth, lament and wail: “The fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.”


Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them until no one is left. Woe to them indeed when I depart from them!


I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down by your enemies; your foes shall rule over you, and you shall flee though no one pursues you.


How could one have routed a thousand and two put a myriad to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, the Lord had given them up?
