The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely;


The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants, for they have transgressed laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.


Turn back to him whom you have deeply betrayed, O people of Israel.


Thus says the Lord concerning this people: Truly they have loved to wander; they have not restrained their feet; therefore the Lord does not accept them; now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.


As for you, mortal, prophesy, and say: Thus says the Lord God concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say: A sword, a sword! Drawn for slaughter, polished to consume, to flash like lightning.


Since the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; there they have continued. Shall not war overtake them in Gibeah?


And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.


Blow the horn in Gibeah, the trumpet in Ramah. Sound the alarm at Beth-aven; look behind you, Benjamin!


But they do not consider that I remember all their wickedness. Now their deeds surround them; they are before my face.


Though they offer choice sacrifices, though they eat flesh, the Lord does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.


The prophet is a sentinel for my God over Ephraim, yet a hunter’s snare is on all his ways and hostility in the house of his God.


I said, “Surely the city will fear me; it will accept correction; it will not lose sight of all that I have brought upon it.” But they were the more eager to make all their deeds corrupt.


But his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into a city of foreigners, who do not belong to the people of Israel, but we will continue on to Gibeah.”


Then at evening there was an old man coming from his work in the field. The man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was residing in Gibeah. (The people of the place were Benjaminites.)


While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, a perverse lot, surrounded the house and started pounding on the door. They said to the old man, the master of the house, “Bring out the man who came into your house, so that we may have intercourse with him.”


Surrounding the Benjaminites, they pursued them from Nohah and trod them down as far as a place east of Gibeah.
