It was like this with me: by day the heat consumed me and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.


for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.


When my spirit is faint, you know my way. In the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me.


I will exult and rejoice in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have taken notice of my adversities


O God, you are my God; I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.


God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them.


Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord: I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.


They did not say, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?”


I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me, for now, O Ephraim, you have prostituted yourself; Israel is defiled.


Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree, in its first season, I saw your ancestors. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to a thing of shame and became detestable like the thing they loved.


The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of trouble; he protects those who take refuge in him,


but anyone who loves God is known by him.


Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles? How can you want to be enslaved to them again?


Surely the Lord your God has blessed you in all your undertakings; he knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.” ’


He sustained him in a desert land, in a howling wilderness waste; he shielded him, cared for him, guarded him as the apple of his eye.


who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock.
