Then seven ears, thin and blighted by the east wind, sprouted after them.


King Pul of Assyria came against the land; Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, so that he might help him confirm his hold on the royal power.


Moreover he made high places in the hill country of Judah and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness and made Judah go astray.


“Should the wise answer with windy knowledge and fill themselves with the east wind?


But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.


Why do you go about so much to change your way? You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.


The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds, and your lovers shall go into captivity; then you will be ashamed and dismayed because of all your wickedness.


And I will cast you out of my sight, just as I cast out all your kinsfolk, all the offspring of Ephraim.


We have made a pact with Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.


Look, it has been transplanted. Will it thrive? When the east wind strikes it, will it not utterly wither, wither on the bed where it grew?


Ephraim has surrounded me with lies and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.


I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim, for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.


Though you prostitute yourself, O Israel, do not let Judah become guilty. Do not enter into Gilgal or go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear, “As the Lord lives.”


A wind has wrapped them in its wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their altars.


When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to the great king. But he is not able to cure you or heal your wound.


when I would heal Israel, the corruption of Ephraim is revealed, and the wicked deeds of Samaria, for they deal falsely; the thief breaks in, and the bandits raid outside.


Ephraim has become like a dove, silly and without sense; they call upon Egypt, they go to Assyria.


For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no meal; if it were to yield, foreigners would devour it.
