I have heard,” he said, “that there is grain in Egypt; go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.”


But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should come to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the River Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our possessions.


I shall not die, but I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord.


“Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


But your little ones, who you said would become plunder, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have despised.


May Reuben live and not die out, even though his numbers are few.”
