Now these are the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran was the father of Lot.


Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the plain and moved his tent as far as Sodom.


Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.


So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the Lord.


But the men inside reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door.


He said, “Please, my lords, turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet; then you can rise early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the square.”


Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land.


Then Joseph removed them from his father’s knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.


When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square,


the stranger has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the traveler—


I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.


Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot, they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,


Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.


No sooner had Boaz gone up to the gate and sat down there than the next-of-kin of whom Boaz had spoken came passing by. So Boaz said, “Come over; sit down here.” And he went over and sat down.
