He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”


The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will so greatly multiply your offspring that they cannot be counted for multitude.”


I will bless her and also give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”


And I will make my covenant between me and you and will make you exceedingly numerous.”


As for Ishmael, I have heard you; I will bless him and make him fruitful and exceedingly numerous; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.


I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.


seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?


As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.”


I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies,


I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth shall gain blessing for themselves through your offspring,


and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring.


May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and numerous, that you may become a company of peoples.


Yet you have said, ‘I will surely do you good and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted because of their number.’ ”


So he spent that night there, and from what he had with him he took a present for his brother Esau,


God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall spring from you.


Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.


And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted.


Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea; they ate and drank and were happy.


But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion on them; he turned toward them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and would not destroy them, nor has he banished them from his presence until now.


Joab gave the total count of the people to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and in Judah four hundred seventy thousand who drew the sword.


David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven.


O Lord God, let your promise to my father David now be fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.


You shall know that your descendants will be many and your offspring like the grass of the earth.


But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.


Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”


Just as the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will increase the offspring of my servant David and the Levites who minister to me.


Who can count the dust of Jacob or number the dust cloud of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, and let my end be like his!”


The Lord your God has multiplied you, so that today you are as numerous as the stars of heaven.


Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.”


After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.


For whenever the Israelites put in seed, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east would come up against them.


For they and their livestock would come up, and they would even bring their tents, as thick as locusts; neither they nor their camels could be counted, so they wasted the land as they came in.
