So Jehoahaz was left with an army of not more than fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.


He carried away all Jerusalem, all the officials, all the warriors, ten thousand captives, all the artisans and the smiths; no one remained except the poorest people of the land.


The city was wide and large, but the people within it were few, and no houses had been built.


You multiplied their descendants like the stars of heaven and brought them into the land that you had told their ancestors to enter and possess.


If the Lord of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah.


Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth dwindled, and few people are left.


Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said, “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate;


Even if a tenth part remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled.” (The holy seed is its stump.)


the prophet Jeremiah and said, “Be good enough to listen to our plea, and pray to the Lord your God for us—for all this remnant. For there are only a few of us left out of many, as your eyes can see.


I will let loose wild animals against you, and they shall bereave you of your children and destroy your livestock; they shall make you few in number, and your roads shall be deserted.


For thus says the Lord God: The city that marched out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which marched out a hundred shall have ten left.


And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved, but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut short those days.


The Lord your God has multiplied you, so that today you are as numerous as the stars of heaven.


May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times more and bless you, as he has promised you!


Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in heaven.


The Lord will scatter you among the peoples; only a few of you will be left among the nations where the Lord will lead you.
