Whoever sheds the blood of a human, by a human shall that person’s blood be shed, for in his own image God made humans.


Now the whole family has risen against your servant. They say, ‘Give up the man who struck his brother, so that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he murdered, even if we destroy the heir as well.’ Thus they would quench my one remaining ember and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”


Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year, and David inquired of the Lord. The Lord said, “There is bloodguilt on Saul and on his house because he put the Gibeonites to death.”


They buried the bones of Saul and of his son Jonathan in the land of Benjamin in Zela, in the tomb of his father Kish; they did all that the king commanded. After that, God heeded supplications for the land.


The king replied to him, “Do as he has said, strike him down and bury him, and thus take away from me and from my father’s house the guilt for the blood that Joab shed without cause.


No eye pitied you to do any of these things for you out of compassion for you, but you were thrown out in the open field, for you were abhorred on the day you were born.


Anyone who kills a human being shall be put to death.


One who kills an animal shall make restitution for it, but one who kills a human being shall be put to death.


Moreover you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer who is subject to the death penalty; a murderer must be put to death.


you must not yield to or heed any such persons. Show them no pity or compassion, and do not shield them.


then the elders of the killer’s city shall send to have the culprit taken from there and handed over to the avenger of blood to be put to death.


Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.


So you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from your midst, because you must do what is right in the sight of the Lord.


you shall cut off her hand; show no pity.


You shall devour all the peoples that the Lord your God is giving over to you, showing them no pity; you shall not serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.


and when the Lord your God gives them over to you and you defeat them, then you must utterly destroy them. Make no covenant with them and show them no mercy.
