Deuteronomy 1:17 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition 2021

17 You must not be partial in judging: hear out the small and the great alike; you shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. Any case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’

We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up. But God will not take away a life; he will devise plans so as not to keep an outcast banished forever from his presence.


He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,


and said to the judges, “Consider what you are doing, for you judge not on behalf of humans but on the Lord’s behalf; he is with you in giving judgment.


because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence and did not go out of doors—


“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah


You will surely wear yourself out, both you and these people with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.


Let them sit as judges for the people at all times; let them bring every important case to you but decide every minor case themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.


And they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any minor case they decided themselves.


It is not right to be partial to the guilty or to subvert the innocent in judgment.


These also are sayings of the wise: Partiality in judging is not good.


To show partiality is not good, yet for a piece of bread a person may do wrong.


The fear of others lays a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord is secure.


But you, gird up your loins; stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not break down before them, or I will break you before them.


“You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor.


so I make you despised and humbled before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.


So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality.


And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?


So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you are right in what you say and teach, and you show deference to no one but teach the way of God in accordance with truth.


For God shows no partiality.


And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Lord in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.


For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe,


You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


“You shall not deprive a resident alien or an orphan of justice; you shall not take a widow’s garment in pledge.


“Suppose two persons have a dispute and enter into litigation, and the judges decide between them, declaring one to be in the right and the other to be in the wrong.


For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong has been done, and there is no partiality.


but, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals but to please God, who tests our hearts.


But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.


If you invoke as Father the one who judges impartially according to each person’s work, live in fear during the time of your exile.


But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him, for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”


If one person sins against another, someone can intercede for the sinner with the Lord, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can make intercession?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to kill them.
