Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.


To fill their belly to the full, God will send his fierce anger into them and rain it upon them as their food.


Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds settle upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.


My lyre is turned to mourning and my pipe to the voice of those who weep.


Instead of perfume there will be a stench; and instead of a sash, a rope; and instead of well-styled hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a binding of sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.


Your wickedness will punish you, and your faithlessness will convict you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord God of hosts.


For every head is shaved and every beard cut off; on all the hands there are gashes and on the loins sackcloth.


O daughter of my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; make mourning as for an only child, most bitter lamentation, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.


The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning.


They shall put on sackcloth; horror shall cover them. Shame shall be on all faces, baldness on all their heads.


You, O mortal, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.


I will put an end to all her mirth, her festivals, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed festivals.


I will punish her for the festival days of the Baals, to whom she offered incense and decked herself with her rings and jewelry and went after her lovers and forgot me, says the Lord.


Lament like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.


“If anyone loses the hair from his head, he is bald, but he is clean.


I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.


Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps.


The songs of the temple shall become wailings on that day,” says the Lord God; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!”


Like thorns they are entangled; like drunkards they are drunk; they are consumed like dry straw.


And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that, when they look on the one whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly over him as one weeps over a firstborn.


Rejoice during your festival, you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female slaves, as well as the Levites, the strangers, the orphans, and the widows resident in your towns.
