Whoever flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.


who say, “Let him make haste; let him speed his work that we may see it; let the plan of the Holy One of Israel hasten to fulfillment, that we may know it!”


They will roar over it on that day, like the roaring of the sea. And if one look to the land— only darkness and distress; and the light grows dark with its clouds.


Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they want God on their side.


or they will look to the earth, but they will see only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and they will be thrust into thick darkness.


Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land was burned, and the people became like fuel for the fire; no one spared another.


Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness and before your feet stumble on the mountains at twilight; while you look for light, he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.


See how they say to me, “Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come!”


Alas! that day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob, yet he shall be rescued from it.


Mortal, what is this proverb of yours about the land of Israel that says, “The days are prolonged, and every vision comes to nothing”?


Mortal, the house of Israel is saying, “The vision that he sees is for many years ahead; he prophesies for distant times.”


Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.


The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.


The Lord utters his voice at the head of his army; how vast is his host! Numberless are those who obey his command. Truly the day of the Lord is great, terrible indeed—who can endure it?


The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.


For the day of the Lord is near against all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.


See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.


wasting hunger, burning consumption, bitter pestilence. The teeth of beasts I will send against them, with venom of things crawling in the dust.


But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be destroyed with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.


and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!”
