A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.


To make an apt answer is a joy to anyone, and a word in season, how good it is!


But as for me, I am filled with power, with the spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.


Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.


Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, and they spoke the word to no one except Jews.


But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists also, proclaiming the Lord Jesus.


News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.


for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were brought to the Lord.


and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a great many people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.”


At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.


Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a childhood friend of Herod the ruler, and Saul.


Then the apostles and the elders, with the consent of the whole church, decided to choose men from among them and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers,


All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.


The next day we left and came to Caesarea, and we went into the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the seven, and stayed with him.


And while the blood of your witness Stephen was shed, I myself was standing by, approving and keeping the coats of those who killed him.’


But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.


Therefore, brothers and sisters, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task,


Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.


Then the high priest asked him, “Are these things so?”


So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.


Yet this is to your credit: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
