Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered and separated among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not appropriate for the king to tolerate them.


When he reached the Benjamin Gate, a sentinel there named Irijah son of Shelemiah son of Hananiah arrested the prophet Jeremiah saying, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.”


Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to be put to death because he is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city and all the people by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”


Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words.


it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!


There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, “He will be called a Nazarene.”


and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.”


(This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city and for murder.)


They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man inciting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”


He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished.


But they were insistent and said, “He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place.”


But some believers who belonged to the sect of the Pharisees stood up and said, “It is necessary for them to be circumcised and ordered to keep the law of Moses.”


shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help! This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place; more than that, he has actually brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”


Up to this point they listened to him, but then they shouted, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.”


But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors, believing everything laid down according to the law or written in the prophets.


But, to detain you no further, I beg you to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness.


When he arrived, the Jews who had gone down from Jerusalem surrounded him, bringing many serious charges against him, which they could not prove.


They have known for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that I have belonged to the strictest sect of our religion and lived as a Pharisee.


But we would like to hear from you what you think, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.”


Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy,


They set up false witnesses who said, “This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law,


Indeed, there have to be factions among you, for only so will it become clear who among you are genuine.


when slandered, we speak kindly. We have become like the rubbish of the world, the dregs of all things, to this very day.


For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly.
