Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to reside there as an alien, for the famine was severe in the land.


In every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a festival and a holiday. Furthermore, many of the peoples of the country professed to be Jews because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.


Advance, O horses, and dash madly, O chariots! Let the warriors go forth: Cush and Put, who carry the shield, the Ludim, who draw the bow.


Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all those with shaved temples who live in the desert. For all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.


Cush and Put and Lud and all the mixed populations and Libya and the people of the allied land shall fall with them by the sword.


He shall gain control of the treasures of gold and of silver and all the riches of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train.


When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.


“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, the inhabitants of many cities;

and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”

As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross.


They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.


But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists also, proclaiming the Lord Jesus.


Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a childhood friend of Herod the ruler, and Saul.


Then Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. John, however, left them and returned to Jerusalem,


When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.


Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.


But Paul decided not to take with them one who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work.


They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.


Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.


There he found a Jew named Aquila from Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them,


After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.


Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”


That night the Lord stood near him and said, “Keep up your courage! For just as you have testified for me in Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also in Rome.”


After we had sailed across the sea that is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia.


The brothers and sisters from there, when they heard of us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage.


What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.


Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and others of those from Cilicia and Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen.


hence my eagerness to proclaim the gospel to you also who are in Rome.


To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.


when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me


and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that is prophetically called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.
