Now Joab son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s mind was on Absalom.


Asahel pursued Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he followed him.

Among the Thirty were Asahel brother of Joab; Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem;

From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles on the mountains:


Ezer the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third,


Asahel brother of Joab was fourth, for the fourth month, and his son Zebadiah after him; in his division were twenty-four thousand.


He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.


Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful, but time and chance happen to them all.


Until the day breathes and the shadows flee, turn, my beloved, be like a gazelle or a young stag on the cleft mountains.


Make haste, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag upon the mountains of spices!


Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not retain their strength, nor shall the mighty save their lives;


God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer and makes me tread upon the heights. To the leader: with stringed instruments.


Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
