Now Absalom had set Amasa over the army in the place of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigal daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.


Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.”


You delivered me from strife with the peoples; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me.
