34 To this day they continue to practice their former customs. They do not worship the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.

Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans and have prevailed.”


Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.


There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.


God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall you be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he was called Israel.


He then said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: See, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes.


But now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here.’


Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”;


When they first settled there, they did not worship the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them that killed some of them.


So they worshiped the Lord but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.


They would not listen, however, but continued to practice their former custom.


My companion laid hands on a friend and violated a covenant with me


Those who walk uprightly fear the Lord, but one who is devious in conduct despises him.


Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and who came forth from the loins of Judah, who swear by the name of the Lord and invoke the God of Israel but not in truth or right.
