The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. The shepherds also have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, to their own gain, one and all.


For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.


Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.


They come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but they will not obey them. For flattery is on their lips, but their heart is set on their gain.


“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.


He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it a den of robbers.”


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in you stop them.


But if anyone is disposed to be contentious—we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.


Now we command you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother or sister living irresponsibly and not according to the tradition that they received from us.


Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk,


not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money.


Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money;


Have nothing to do with profane and foolish tales. Train yourself in godliness,


for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.


Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment,


holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid them!


As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people, of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith, also oppose the truth.


they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what it is not right to teach.


They have left the straight road and have gone astray, following the road of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of doing wrong


And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.


Woe to them! For they go the way of Cain and abandon themselves to Balaam’s error for the sake of gain and perish in Korah’s rebellion.
