King Joash did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him but killed his son. As he was dying, he said, “May the Lord see and avenge!”


Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise.


Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me!


Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust, deliver me!


Hear, you peoples, all of you; listen, O earth, and all that is in it, and let the Lord God be a witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.


I must bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him, until he takes my side and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out to the light; I shall see his vindication.


It is not I who have sinned against you, but you are the one who does me wrong by making war on me. Let the Lord, who is judge, decide today for the Israelites or for the Ammonites.”
