Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up and do not know who will gather.


Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.


I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.


For thus says the Lord: You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.


O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: “Our ancestors have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit.


At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem: A hot wind comes from me out of the bare heights in the desert toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow or cleanse,


Instead, we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials, used to do in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. We used to have plenty of food and prospered and saw no misfortune.


but have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.


I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents, nor observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols.


Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they have rejected the instruction of the Lord and have not kept his statutes, but they have been led astray by the same lies after which their ancestors walked.


one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering;


Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?


for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless hearts were darkened.


and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”


For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.


You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of humans.


who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,


Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer walk as the gentiles walk, in the futility of their minds;


He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.


he entered once for all into the holy place, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.


so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.


You have already spent enough time in doing what the gentiles like to do, living in debauchery, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry.


You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
