As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”


He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”


One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?”


For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”


He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?”


A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”


But the Pharisees and the experts in the law, not having been baptized by him, rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)


They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.


For if the inheritance comes from the law, it no longer comes from the promise, but God granted it to Abraham through the promise.
