though you make them grow on the day that you plant them and make them blossom in the morning that you sow, yet the harvest will flee away in a day of sickness and incurable pain.


Judah mourns, and her gates languish; they lie in gloom on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.


Cut off from Babylon the sower and the wielder of the sickle in time of harvest; because of the destroying sword, all of them shall return to their own people, and all of them shall flee to their own land.


Who is wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, so that they may declare it? Why is the land ruined and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through?


Mortal, prophesy, and say: Thus says the Lord God: Wail, “Alas for the day!”


Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: In all the squares there shall be wailing, and in all the streets they shall say, “Alas! Alas!” They shall call the farmers to mourning and those skilled in lamentation to wailing;


and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
