Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of Yahweh hath spoken it.

The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of Yahweh shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

For this is the day of the Sovereign Yahweh of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Sovereign Yahweh of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.

And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

And the next day he showed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
