who love to spread malicious slander. With inflated egos they hurl hateful insults at God, yet they are nothing more than arrogant boasters. They are rebels against their parents and totally immoral.

How they brag and boast of their cravings, exalting the greedy. They congratulate themselves as they despise you—

They trust in their treasures and boast in their riches, yet not one of them, though rich as a king, could rescue his own brother from the guilt of his sins. No one could give God the ransom price for the soul of another, let alone for himself.

Boasters collapse, unable to survive your scrutiny, for your hatred of evildoers is clear.

You call yourself a mighty man, a big shot? Why do you boast in the evil you have done? Yet God’s loyal love will protect me and carry the day!

Those who hate my ways will cringe before me and their punishment will be eternal.

Listen to them bragging among themselves, big in their own eyes, all because of the crimes they’ve committed against your people! See how they’re crushing those who love you, God, cruelly oppressing those who belong to you.

Shame covers all who boast in other gods, for they worship idols. For all the supernatural powers once worshiped the true and living God.

God, the great forgiver, answered their prayers, yet he would punish them when they went astray.

There is one who makes plans to do evil— Master Schemer is his name.

As the north wind brings a storm, saying things you shouldn’t brings a storm to any relationship.

The eye that mocks his father and dishonors his elderly mother deserves to be plucked out by the ravens of the valley and fed to the young vultures!

But those who stumble and miss me will be sorry they did! For ignoring what I have to say will bring harm to your own soul. Those who hate me are simply flirting with death!”

They have despised their fathers and mothers, cheated the foreigners who live within your walls, and mistreated the widow and orphan.

For didn’t God say, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever abuses or insults his father or mother must be put to death?’

From then on Jesus began to clearly reveal to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer injustice from the elders, leading priests, and religious scholars. He also explained that he would be killed and three days later be raised to life again.

“You can expect betrayal even by your parents, your brothers, your relatives and friends—and yes, some of you will die as martyrs.

The world can’t hate you, but it does me, for I am exposing their evil deeds.

Some time ago there was a man named Theudas who rose up claiming to be somebody. He had a following of about four hundred men, but when he was killed, all of his followers were scattered, and nothing came of it.

Now, you claim to be a Jew because you lean upon your trust in the law and boast in your relationship with God.

Even though you boast in the law, you dishonor God, the Lawgiver, when you break it!

Where, then, is there room for boasting? Do our works bring God’s acceptance? Not at all! It was not our works of keeping the law but our faith in his finished work that makes us right with God.

We’re not trying to take credit for the ministry done by others, going beyond the limits God set for us. Instead, our hope soars as your faith continues to grow, causing a great expansion of our ministry among you.

Now I’m afraid that when I come to you I may find you different than I desire you to be, and you may find me different than you would like me to be. I don’t want to find you in disunity, with jealousy and angry outbursts, with selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance, and turmoil.

He is the opposing counterpart who exalts himself over everything that is called “God” or is worshiped and who sits enthroned in God’s temple and makes himself out to be a god.

People will be self-centered lovers of themselves and obsessed with money. They will boast of great things as they strut around in their arrogant pride and mock all that is right. They will ignore their own families. They will be ungrateful and ungodly.

For it wasn’t that long ago that we behaved foolishly in our stubborn disobedience. We were easily led astray as slaves to worldly passions and pleasures. We wasted our lives in doing evil, and with hateful jealousy we hated others.

And so the tongue is a small part of the body yet it carries great power! Just think of how a small flame can set a huge forest ablaze.

But here you are, boasting in your ignorance, for to be presumptuous about what you’ll do tomorrow is evil!

They spout off with their grandiose, impressive nonsense. Consumed with the lusts of the flesh, they lure back into sin those who recently escaped from their error.

These people are always complaining and never satisfied—finding fault with everyone. They follow their own evil desires and their mouths speak scandalous things. They enjoy using seductive flattery to manipulate others.
