Your displeasure rests with those who are arrogant, who think they know everything; you rebuke the rebellious who refuse your laws.

I have longed for you with the passion of my heart; don’t let me stray from your directions!

The ungodly have done their best to throw me off track, but I’ll not deviate from what you’ve told me to do.

Lord, you reject those who reject your laws, for they fool no one but themselves!

Shame upon the proud liars! See how they oppress me, all because of my passion for your precepts!

For though you are lofty and exalted, you stoop to embrace the lowly. Yet you keep your distance from those filled with pride.

But when the Lord has carried out his purpose on Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria because of his overbearing arrogance and unrestrained pride!

Who gave up Jacob to looters and Israel to robbers? It was Yahweh himself, against whom we sinned by not walking in holy ways nor heeding holy words.

So I brought disgrace on the holy priests of the holy sanctuary and brought destruction to Jacob, humiliation and scorn to Israel.

“You claim to speak to us on behalf of Yahweh, but we refuse to listen to you whatsoever!

And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol, and glorify God, the King of heaven! All his works are right and true, and all his ways are right. He knows how to humble those who strut around in pride.”

“Remember this: everyone with a lofty opinion of who he is and who seeks to raise himself up will be publicly humbled. And everyone with a modest opinion of who he is and chooses to humble himself will be raised up before all.”

“Which one of them left for home that day reconciled to God? The humble tax collector, not the religious leader! For everyone who praises himself will one day be publicly humiliated, and everyone who humbles himself will one day be publicly honored and lifted up.”

Yet, Christ paid the full price to set us free from the curse of the law. He absorbed the curse completely as he became a curse in our place. For it is written: “Everyone who is hung upon a tree is cursed.”

But he continues to pour out more and more grace upon us. For it says, “God resists you when you are proud but continually pours out grace when you are humble.”

In the same way, the younger ones should willingly support the leadership of the elders. In every relationship, each of you must wrap around yourself the apron of a humble servant. Because: God resists you when you are proud but multiplies grace and favor when you are humble.
