Is the axe greater than the one who wields it? Is the saw greater than the one who cuts with it? Can the axe strike without a hand to move it? Can a lifeless wooden cane walk all by itself?

Woe to arrogant Assyria, the rod of my anger! The club I place in the king’s hand is my fury.

They are coming from a faraway land, from the end of the heavens. Here comes Yahweh with his instruments of judgment, ready to ravage the entire land.

“ ‘Have you not learned that I planned all this long ago? Yes, from ages past I planned it, and now I fulfill it, that you would conquer fortified cities and turn them into piles of stones.

“This is what Yahweh says to his anointed one, Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped as my servant to conquer nations and dethrone their kings. For I will open doors before him and no fortified gate will remain closed.

You will be broken, O nations, and will be shattered. Listen, all you distant nations. Prepare for war, though it will backfire on you! Prepare for war, yet you will be shattered!

The entire region will become a ruin, empty as a desert, and these nations will be carried off to Babylon to serve her king for seventy years.

‘Behold, I will summon my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, along with all the northern armies, and bring them to fight against this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them a desolation. I will turn them into ruins forever. Everyone will be utterly astonished by the sight of what I have done to them.

Babylon, you hammered the whole world to pieces, but now your hammer is broken and shattered to pieces. Now you are an object of horror to the nations.

I handed over the sword for someone to polish so he can use it, sharp, shiny, and ready for the hand of the executioner.

I will vent my fury on you, blow the fire of my rage against you, and hand you over to brutal men whose skill is destruction.

This infuriated the king! So he sent his soldiers to execute those murderers and had their city burned to the ground.
