The Passion Translation

“Make Moab drink from this cup until drunk because she exalted herself against Yahweh. Drunken Moab will wallow in her own vomit until she makes the world laugh at her.

God-Enthroned merely laughs at them; the Sovereign One mocks their madness!

But you, Lord, break out laughing at their plans, amused by their arrogance, scoffing at their sinful ways.

You have taught us hard lessons and made us drink the wine of bewilderment.

A foaming cup filled with judgment mixed with fury is in the hands of the Lord Yahweh, full to the brim and ready to run over. He filled it up for the wicked, and they will drink it down to the very last drop!

Is the axe greater than the one who wields it? Is the saw greater than the one who cuts with it? Can the axe strike without a hand to move it? Can a lifeless wooden cane walk all by itself?

The Lord Yahweh has mixed up their minds and poured into them a distorted spirit that will make Egypt dizzy and act like a drunk who staggers around in his own vomit.

All of their banqueting tables are covered with filthy vomit; vomit is everywhere!

Be totally shocked and amazed by what I am about to say to you: “Blind yourselves—and be totally blind! (They are drunk but not from wine. They stagger but not from hard liquor.)

Wake up! Wake up! Get up, Jerusalem! You have drunk enough from the cup Yahweh handed you. It was the cup of his anger, and you’ve drained it dry— the intoxicating bowl that makes men stagger!

So I trampled down nations in my anger and shattered them in my fury and spilled their blood on the ground.”

How it is broken! How they wail! How Moab has turned her back in disgrace! All the surrounding nations find Moab a laughingstock and a thing of horror.

Moab will be destroyed, wiped from the earth, because she exalted herself against Yahweh.”

“Assemble the archers and attack Babylon! Encamp around her and leave no way of escape. Treat her as she has treated others and repay her for all she has done, for she was arrogant and defiant to Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

Are they ready to feast? I will prepare them a drink that will make them drunk. They will drink themselves tipsy and fall into an everlasting sleep,” declares Yahweh.

I will make her soldiers and all her leaders drunk, including the advisers, officials, and military commanders. They will fall into an everlasting sleep, never to wake again,” declares the King, whose name is Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies.

Babylon was like a golden cup in Yahweh’s hand; she made the whole world drunk. The nations drank her wine and then went mad.

“They have heard my groans, yet I have no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad you have done this to me. You threatened me and kept your promise— oh, that the same would happen to them!

He has given me my fill of bitterness and made me drunk with wormwood.

Go ahead, you people of Edom and Uz, laugh on and be glad like nothing will happen to you! Your day is coming to drink from this cup; you will get drunk and stagger naked.

“The king will grow more and more arrogant and do whatever he pleases. He will exalt himself above every other god, and utter horrendous blasphemies against the God of all gods. He will be successful until God’s wrath reaches the boiling point, for what God has decreed will certainly be fulfilled.

Instead, you lifted yourself up above the sovereign Lord of the heavens. And you brought into your banquet hall the vessels of his temple so that you and your nobles, your wives, and your concubines might drink wine from them. You lifted praises to your gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, who do not see or hear or know anything; but the God who controls your very life breath and every move you make you did not glorify.

It grew so powerful that it attacked the armies of heaven and hurled some of the starry host to the ground and trampled them down.

He is the opposing counterpart who exalts himself over everything that is called “God” or is worshiped and who sits enthroned in God’s temple and makes himself out to be a god.

It split the great city Babylon into three parts, and other cities of the nations collapsed. For God remembered great Babylon and her winecup filled with his fiery wrath.
