You will not find me continually accusing them or holding anger against them, lest they feel defeated and lose heart before me. For I am the One who gave the breath of life to my people.

Yahweh said, “My Spirit will not strive with humanity indefinitely, for they are mortal. Their life span will be shortened to only one hundred and twenty years.”

Will you forever hold a grudge? Will your anger endure for all time?

No, but with measured justice he exiled them and contended with them. He removed them from the land with his severe blast on the day his searing east wind blew.

For this reason the Lord is still waiting to show his favor to you so he can show you his marvelous love. He waits to be gracious to you. He sits on his throne ready to show mercy to you. For Yahweh is the Lord of justice, faithful to keep his promises. Overwhelmed with bliss are all who will entwine their hearts in him, waiting for him to help them.

Here are the words of the true God, Yahweh, the one who created the starry heavens and stretched them out. He is the one who formed the earth and filled it with life. He gives breath to every person and spirit to everyone everywhere.

Yet still, Yahweh, you are our Father. We are like clay and you are our Potter. Each one of us is the creative, artistic work of your hands.

Correct us, Yahweh, according to what is right, but go easy on us— don’t correct us in your anger, or there would be nothing left of us.

Surely, you won’t hold a grudge against me forever, right? You won’t always be angry with me, will you?’ This is only what you say, but you keep on doing all the evil you can get away with!”

King Zedekiah then secretly promised me with an oath, saying, “As surely as Yahweh, the giver of this life of ours, lives, I will neither have you put to death nor hand you over to these men who are determined to kill you.”

Listen, every human life belongs to me; both the parent and the child are mine. The one who sins is held responsible and will die.”

And isn’t it true that we respect our earthly fathers even though they corrected and disciplined us? Then we should demonstrate an even greater respect for God, our spiritual Father, as we submit to his life-giving discipline.
