The Passion Translation

When I came to you, why was no one there? When I called, why did no one answer? Am I powerless to rescue you or too weak to deliver you? With only a threat I can evaporate the sea and dry up the rivers as a desert, leaving the fish to rot and die of thirst.

Do you think there is anything too marvelous for Yahweh? I will appear to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son!”

You roared over the waters of the Red Sea, making a dry path for your people to cross through.

Whenever he chooses he can dry up a river and turn the land into a desert.

Yahweh has stretched out his hand over the sea of humanity and has shaken the kingdoms of this world. He has given his command to destroy Phoenicia’s fortresses.

Where is there a god that could save its people from my mighty hand?’ ”

But when I look, I find no one who is capable to counsel me! There is no one who can respond to me with the right answer! Who could I even ask?

I will level their hills and mountains and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn rivers into islands and dry up their lakes.

Yahweh is the one who makes a way in the sea, a pathway in the mighty waters.

I say to deep waters, ‘Dry up!’ and to rivers, ‘Become dry!’

Wasn’t it you who dried up the Red Sea with its deep waters and made a path through the sea to rescue your redeemed?

For I, Yahweh, have invited you to come back like a depressed, deserted wife. Like a young wife who has experienced rejection, I am drawing you back to me,” says Yahweh.

Truly Yahweh’s arm is not too powerless to save you nor his ear too deaf to hear.

And then he was astonished to see that there was no champion, not even one, who would rescue the oppressed. So then his own mighty power rescued him, and his own righteousness supported him.

Who led them through the depths of the sea? They were as sure-footed as horses on dry, level ground— they did not stumble.

We have all become contaminated with sin, and you see our self-righteousness as nothing better than a menstrual rag. We are all like fallen leaves, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

For I will destine you for the sword! You will all kneel down to be slaughtered like sheep because when I called, you did not answer, and when I spoke, you did not listen! You did evil before me and chose what I despise.”

So I chose to punish them and to bring on them what they fear the most because I called out to them and they ignored me. I spoke and they did not listen but did what is evil in my sight and chose what I despise.”

You are a mighty warrior! Why are you acting like a man overcome with weakness, like someone who can’t save us? Yet here you are, dwelling among us, Yahweh. You’ve attached your name to us. Don’t leave us now!

The words of Jonadab son of Rechab ordered his descendants to drink no wine, and they have fully obeyed their ancestor’s command, for they drank no wine even until today. But I have spoken to you so urgently, over and over, yet you refuse to listen.

I have repeatedly sent my servants the prophets to you, saying, “Repent, every one of you, from your evil actions and correct the way you’ve been living. Do not chase after other gods to serve them, and you will continue to live on the land I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you have not paid attention or listened to me.

“Roam the streets of Jerusalem; search her streets and public squares, and note what you see. See if you can find even one person who pursues justice. If you find even one acting with integrity, I will surely spare Jerusalem.

Even while you were doing these things, I, Yahweh, spoke to you over and over and called to you, but you would neither listen nor answer me.

“And when you tell them all this, they will not hear you. You will call to them, but they won’t respond to you.

I have listened carefully to what they say, but nothing they say is right. No one is sorry about his sin, saying, “What have I done wrong?” Everyone keeps on going his own way, like a war-horse plunging headlong into battle.

I now give you one more chance. When you hear the ram’s horn and the music of the flute, the lyre, the ten-stringed harp, the triangular harp, the drums, and all the other instruments, you will bow down to the ground and worship the golden statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a white-hot fiery furnace. So now, who is the god that can save you from my power?”

So I hereby make this decree: Any person from any nation or language who says anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego will be torn limb from limb, and his house will be destroyed, because there is no other god who is able to rescue so miraculously!”

As he drew near the den of lions, he called out to Daniel with a trembling voice: “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve so faithfully, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

He is a mighty savior and deliverer. He performs astonishing miracles in heaven and on earth, He alone has rescued Daniel from the claws of the lions.”

So they shook him awake, saying, “Teacher, don’t you even care that we are all about to die!” Fully awake, he rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, “Hush! Be still!” All at once the wind stopped howling and the water became perfectly calm.

He came to the people he created — to those who should have received him, but they did not recognize him.

And here is the basis for their judgment: The Light of God has now come into the world, but the people loved darkness more than the Light, because they want the darkness to conceal their evil.

the water coming downstream toward them stopped flowing and piled up in a solid wall as far upstream as Adam, a place near Zarethan. Yahweh completely cut off the flow of the river so that it drained downstream toward the Desert Sea (the Dead Sea). So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
