The Passion Translation

By the mercy of Yahweh the guilt of Jacob will be forgiven. Yet the full proof of their forgiveness will be when they crush all the altars to false gods and make them into chalkstones, crushed to pieces, with neither cultic poles nor incense altars still standing.

Before I was humbled I used to always wander astray, but now I see the wisdom of your words.

The punishment you brought me through was the best thing that could have happened to me, for it taught me your ways.

When you are punished severely, you learn your lesson well— for painful experiences do wonders to change your life.

You will reap shame from the idols you once delighted in and you will be humiliated by your cultic sacred groves, where you chose to worship.

They will not be infatuated with the religious altars their own hands crafted, nor by what their own fingers have made, nor with their sacred groves or altars of incense.

Then you will see your idols as they are—unclean! Your silver-overlaid idols and gold-plated images are defiled. You will discard them like a filthy menstrual cloth, saying to them, “Good riddance!”

And the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem by a Spirit of justice and by a Spirit of burning.

Speak tenderly from the heart to revive those in Jerusalem, and proclaim that their warfare is over. Her debt of sin is paid for, and she will not be treated as guilty. Prophesy to her that she has received from the hand of Yahweh twice as many blessings as all her sins.”

See, I have purified you in the furnace of adversity, but not like silver—I have refined you in the fire.

When you return, you will purge the land of all its filthy idols and detestable practices.

I will purge out the rebels from among you, those who sin against me. I will remove them from the land where they are exiled, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

Your altars will be deserted, and your incense altars will be smashed. I will slay your people before your idols.

Even some of the wise leaders will stumble, yet this will lead to them being purged, purified, and made clean—until the time of the end, for the appointed time is still to come.”

For this is my covenant promise with them when I forgive their sins.”

But when we are judged, it is the Lord’s training so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

For the Lord’s training of your life is the evidence of his faithful love. And when he draws you to himself, it proves you are his delightful child.”
