In that day, the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, called you to repent with weeping and mourning and to show your remorse by shaving your heads and wearing sackcloth.

The people of Dibon went to their temple to weep; they went up to their high places to lament. Moab wails with sorrow over what happened to Mount Nebo and Mount Medeba. Humiliated, every head is shaved bald and every beard cut off.

But when mercy is shown to scoundrels, they still aren’t able to learn righteousness. Even in a land of integrity, they still do wrong, for they ignore the great majesty of the Lord Yahweh.

“Woe to Ariel —Ariel, the town where David encamped! Go ahead—keep your annual feasts, and year after year celebrate your annual festivals.

A stench will take the place of seductive perfumes; a rope will take the place of a sash, baldness for braided hair, rags instead of a fine robe, and the brand of a captive instead of beauty.

When Hezekiah heard what the commander had said, he tore his robe, put on sackcloth, and went to the temple of Yahweh.

And he sent Eliakim, the palace administrator; Shebna, the royal scribe; and the leading priests—all clothed in sackcloth—to the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz.

They say, ‘Why is it that when we fasted, you did not see it? We starved ourselves, and you didn’t seem to notice.’ “Because on the day you fasted you were seeking only your own desires, and you continue to exploit your workers.

The least and the greatest alike will die in this land. They will not be buried. No one will mourn for them, cut themselves, or shave their heads to show their grief.

Nor are you to go into a house where people are feasting, to enjoy their festivities.

Therefore, put on sackcloth, lament, and wail, for the burning anger of Yahweh has not turned away from us.

“People of Jerusalem, cut off your long hair and throw it away, and raise your song of mourning on the hilltops, for Yahweh has rejected and abandoned the generation of his fury.

They will shave their heads in sorrow for you and dress themselves in sackcloth. They will weep bitterly for you, Tyre, with heartfelt sorrow over your fall.

When Belshazzar was king, he invited a thousand of his nobles to a state banquet, where the wine flowed freely among all his guests.

Listen all you who are rich, for it’s time to weep and howl over the misery that will overtake you!
