you will cry out to me, but I won’t answer. Then it will be too late to expect my help. When desperation drives you to search for me, I will be nowhere to be found.

The people of Dibon went to their temple to weep; they went up to their high places to lament. Moab wails with sorrow over what happened to Mount Nebo and Mount Medeba. Humiliated, every head is shaved bald and every beard cut off.

This was the word the Lord Yahweh spoke in the past about Moab,

Lord Yahweh, in their distress, they reached out to you. When you chastened them, they poured out prayer to you.

Then one day, as he was worshiping in the temple of his god, Nisroch, his sons, Adrammelech and Sharezer, entered the temple and killed him with swords. They escaped into the land of Ararat and the king’s son Esar-haddon succeeded him.

You must be fatigued with so much counsel! Let the stargazers and astrologers take their stand. See if they can help you now! Let them make their monthly predictions. Maybe they can reveal what is about to come upon you.

Their idols are like speechless scarecrows standing in a field; someone must carry them around because they can’t even take a step. So don’t fear them in any way, for they are incapable of doing good or evil.”

Then Moab will be ashamed of their god Chemosh just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, the god who was once their confidence.

I will eliminate Moab’s idolaters, those who offer sacrifices in the high place and make offerings to their god,” declares Yahweh.

Woe to you, O Moab! The people who worshiped Chemosh are gone, for your sons have been taken captive and your daughters into exile.

Moab, you put your faith in your works and your wealth. That is why you, too, will be conquered. Your god Chemosh will go into captivity, along with his priests and officials.
