Genesis 50:24

The Passion Translation

Then Joseph declared to his brothers, “I will die one day, but God will certainly come to you and fulfill his promises to bring you and your descendants from this land and lead you to the land he promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Then Yahweh appeared before Abram and said, “This is the land I will personally deliver to your seed.” So Abram erected an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared before him.

As far as you can see in every direction is the land that I will give to you forever—to you and your seed.

Now, get up and walk through the land—its length and its breadth. All the land you walk upon will be my gift to you!”

On that day, Yahweh entered into covenant with Abram: “I have given this land to your descendants, from the Egyptian border to the great river Euphrates,

Then he said to him, “I am Yahweh, who brought you out of the Babylonian city of Ur, to give you all this land to possess.”

But Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, how can I be sure that I can possess this land for myself?”

I will give to you and your seed the land to which you have migrated. The entire land of Canaan will be yours and your descendants’ as an everlasting possession. And I will be their God forever!”

Yahweh visited Sarah, just as he said he would, and fulfilled his promise to her.

Live there as a foreigner, and my presence will be with you. I promise to bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and your descendants. I will fulfill the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

And Yahweh stood beside him and said to him, “I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. You are lying on the very ground that I will give to you and your descendants.

You will painfully toil and sweat to produce food to eat, until your body—taken from the ground—returns to the ground. For you are from dust, and to dust you will return.”

I will give you the land which I gave to Abraham and to Isaac, and after you are gone, to your descendants.”

I will go with you to Egypt, and I will bring your descendants back to this land. And the hand of Joseph will be there to close your eyes when you die.”

When the time of Israel’s death was near, he summoned his beloved son Joseph and said to him, “Son, do me this favor before I die: Place your hand under my thigh as a pledge that you will show me kindness and loyal love. Do not bury me in Egypt,

Then Israel said to Joseph, “Son, I will die soon, but God’s presence will go with you, and one day, he will take you back to the land of your ancestors.

‘My dying father made me promise that I would bury him in the land of Canaan—in a tomb he had hewn with his own hands. Please give me permission to go and bury my father; then I will return.’ ”

When Adam sinned, the entire world was affected. Sin entered human experience, and death was the result. And so death followed this sin, casting its shadow over all humanity, because all have sinned.

Faith inspired Joseph and opened his eyes to see into the future, for as he was dying he prophesied about the exodus of Israel out of Egypt, and gave instructions that his bones were to be taken from Egypt with them.

Every human being is appointed to die once, and then to face God’s judgment.

They buried Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father. So the land became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.
