When Joseph finally caught up with his brothers, they seized him, stripped him of his ornamented robe, his beautiful full-length robe,

Afterward, the brothers sat down to eat their food. When they looked up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelite merchants coming from Gilead on their way to Egypt. They had many camels loaded with myrrh, spices, and perfumes.

With Joseph standing there, they began to speak among themselves, saying, “Look what’s happened to us! We’re being punished for what we did to Joseph long ago. We heard his cries of anguish and saw the agony of his soul when he begged us for mercy, but we turned a deaf ear. That’s why all this trouble has come upon us!”

For though I did nothing wrong to them, they set a trap for me, wanting me to fail and fall.

He stooped down to lift me out of danger from the desolate pit I was in, out of the muddy mess I had fallen into. Now he’s lifted me up into a firm, secure place and steadied me while I walk along his ascending path.

They have discarded me and thrown me down into the deepest darkness as into a bottomless pit.

Why did you turn all my friends against me? You’ve made me like a cursed man in their eyes. No one wants to be with me now. You’ve caught me in a trap with no way out.

So they took me and put me into the muddy cistern of the king’s son Malchiah in the palace courtyard. There was little water in the cistern, only mud. They lowered me down with ropes, and I sank down deep into the mud.

They captured Yahweh’s anointed leader, our king; the hope of our survival was caught in their traps. We thought that under his protective shadow we would live among the nations.
