Genesis 35:7

The Passion Translation

He built an altar there and named it El-Bethel, because it was the place that God had unveiled himself when Jacob was running from his brother.

Then Yahweh appeared before Abram and said, “This is the land I will personally deliver to your seed.” So Abram erected an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared before him.

From there, he journeyed on toward the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built another altar to Yahweh where he prayed and worshiped Yahweh.

Jacob left Beersheba and journeyed toward Haran.

And Yahweh stood beside him and said to him, “I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. You are lying on the very ground that I will give to you and your descendants.

Terrified and overwhelmed, he said, “How awesome is this place! I have stumbled right into the House of God! This place is a portal, the very gate of heaven!”

He named that place Bethel; though the city was once called Luz.

See! I have set up this sacred stone pillar and it will be your house, God. I promise to set aside a tenth of all that you give me as my gift to you.”

Jacob resumed his journey and entered the land east of Canaan.

I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and return to the land of your birth.’ ”

God said to Jacob, “Arise, go at once to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”

Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

Then come with me; let us go up to Bethel. I will build an altar there to God who answered my prayer when I was in distress and whose presence has been with me wherever I have gone.”

The total perimeter of the city is to be 18,000 cubits. “From that time on the city will be called Yahweh-Lives-There!”

So Gideon built an altar to Yahweh there and named it “In Yahweh there is Peace.” (The altar is still standing at Ophrah, which belongs to the clan of Abiezer.)
