When Jacob found out, he said to Simeon and Levi, “What have you done? You have ruined my name, and now the Canaanites and Perizzites and all the people of this land will hate me! My men are so few that if they unite against me and attack, I and all my household will be destroyed!”

Then they surrendered all the foreign gods they had as well as their earrings. Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem.

Yet God would not permit anyone to touch them, punishing even kings who came against them.

But look at them now, in panic, trembling with terror. For God is on the side of his godly lovers.

All the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea became terrified of the Israelites. For when they heard how Yahweh miraculously dried up the Jordan so that the Israelites could cross over, all their courage melted away.
